Objective: The aim of this review is to summarize the
most important contributions of Avicenna, included in
Al-Qanun, to the anatomy of the ear.
Material and methods: We made a review of several
editions in Arabic and Persian of the first chapter of the
fourth treatise of the third volume of Al-Qanun, and
some chapters of anatomy of the first volume, focusing
on these parts which study the anatomy and physiology
of the ear, and trying to relate the concepts involved with
the current knowledge.
Results: Al-Qanun of Avicenna offers a clear example of
the advanced level of understanding of anatomy, physiology
and pathophysiology of the ear, as they were perceived
since more than a thousand years, and which many
concepts still apply to the present.
Discussion and Conclusion: The contribution to the anatomy
and the physiology of the ear is a clear example of
the involvement of Islamic Medicine and the contribution
of Muslim physicians to the evolution of Otolaryngology.
The scientific contributions of these great masters, like
Avicenna, in these fields should not be ignored.
